Exactech recall litigation

Lawsuits allege that defective vacuum-seal packaging let oxygen degrade the plastic inserts in Exactech knee, hip, and ankle implants, causing them to wear out years early.

What the lawsuits allege

Beginning in 2021, Exactech recalled hundreds of thousands of knee, hip, and ankle implant components after acknowledging that out-of-specification packaging had exposed polyethylene inserts to oxygen, which makes the plastic brittle and fast-wearing once implanted.

The litigation alleges patients received implants that were compromised before the box was ever opened.

Injuries named in the litigation

  • Premature polyethylene insert wear
  • Bone loss (osteolysis)
  • Implant loosening and instability
  • Pain, swelling, and inability to bear weight
  • Revision surgery
